Naqsh-e Jahan Square
Isfahan
The Safavid capital of turquoise domes, covered bridges and one of the largest city squares in the world.

Isfahan became the capital of Safavid Persia under Shah Abbas I at the end of the 16th century. Its centrepiece, Naqsh-e Jahan Square, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site framed by the Shah Mosque, the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, the Ali Qapu Palace and the gateway to the Grand Bazaar.
Along the Zayandeh River, historic bridges such as Si-o-se-pol and Khaju have been gathering places for centuries.
